MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Old Dominion University
We asked VAOSW member Old Dominion University (ODU) some questions about the offshore wind industry in Virginia. Here are answers from Elspeth McMahon, Associate Vice President for Maritime Initiatives at ODU:
1. How do you see offshore wind shaping the broader economy of Hampton Roads over the next decade?
Offshore wind presents an opportunity for economic growth in Hampton Roads by attracting investment, creating high-quality jobs, and expanding the region’s maritime and advanced manufacturing sectors. This industry will grow the local supply chain and create opportunities for technological advancement. The CVOW project will enhance long-term energy resilience in Hampton Roads while supporting a skilled workforce.
2. What kinds of jobs do you anticipate offshore wind to bring to the area, and what skills will be in demand?
The offshore wind sector will generate a range of opportunities. Key positions include electricians, marine technicians, small vessel operators, and project managers. Skills in mechanical and electrical engineering, engineering technology, safety, marine operations, supply chain management, logistics, and data analysis will be needed. Regional workforce development programs continue to focus on training local talent to ensure long-term job accessibility for the Hampton Roads community.
3. How does ODU support the offshore wind industry and the community beyond job creation?
ODU plays a supportive role in offshore wind development through research, partnerships, education, and training. The university contributes to research on how the region can plan and build strategically to boost resiliency. ODU also has consistently fostered innovation and entrepreneurship, helping to grow and support local talent across all maritime sectors.
4. How would the expansion of the offshore wind industry in Virginia benefit ODU?
As the CVOW project takes shape in our backyard, ODU stands to gain through increased research opportunities, industry collaborations, and career pathways for our students. As ODU is a hub for maritime workforce development and research, this growth aligns with our broader mission to support regional economic development while advancing sustainable energy solutions.
5. How important is collaboration between the public and private sectors in making offshore wind a success?
Effective collaboration between public and private sectors is crucial for offshore wind, ensuring that policy, infrastructure, workforce, and community concerns are addressed. ODU contributes to research, education, and outreach, while private companies contribute to advancing technology, developing and financing projects, and creating jobs for our students. Effective governance ensures that offshore wind development aligns economic, environmental, and community priorities, optimizing benefits for the region as a whole. It is a team effort.
