ICYMI: Positive Updates For The CVOW Project Continue
In case you missed it, the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project’s construction is fully underway. Most recently, the fifteenth monopile foundation for the turbines was installed at the site 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach, and construction is continuing without delay to ensure that the project is up and running in 2026 as planned.
Several Virginia news outlets were given an up-close look at CVOW over the past few weeks and have been highlighting its progress, bringing further awareness to the positive momentum of the project now that construction has begun.
See some highlights below:
- Virginia Mercury: As Offshore Wind Installation Rises, Dominion Showcases Environmental, Economic Benefits
“The company has spent about $700 million on the project in the United States, with about $526 million of that in Virginia. The jobs associated with the project include some 1,552 around the country, with about 800 in the state and about 670 in the Hampton Roads area.” - WTKR-TV (Norfolk, VA): Dominion Offers Up-Close Look At Progress Of Offshore Wind Farm Project
“The turbines are built to withstand a category three hurricane and have a lifespan of 30 years. The multi-billion dollar project started in 2013 and will produce the equivalent of 660,000 houses worth of power.” - WAVY-TV (Portsmouth, VA): Dominion Energy Highlights Environmental Mitigation Efforts At Offshore Wind Site
“To be protective of the endangered North Atlantic right whale, no monopiles will be installed between November 1 and April 30, the time that the whales are expected to be migrating past the project area according to Dominion.” - WHRO-FM (Norfolk, VA): How Dominion Is Building Its Offshore Wind Farm — Including Underwater Cables And A Giant Crane
“Construction on the wind farm isn’t limited to the open ocean. The company has to get the energy generated from it back onshore. That’s where underwater cables come in.”
We look forward to continuing to see updates like these as we get closer to a cleaner energy grid in the Commonwealth once the CVOW is fully operational.
