Dominion Energy Announces the End of Piling Season for the CVOW Project
On Friday, Dominion Energy announced the completion of the first monopile installation season for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project off the coast of Virginia Beach.
The construction season, which began on May 1, was completed as scheduled and within budget, reinforcing the project’s progress toward its planned 2026 completion date. When finished, the CVOW project will feature 176 turbines capable of generating enough electricity to power up to 660,000 homes in Virginia. To date, 78 monopile foundations and four offshore substation foundations have been successfully installed.
In the announcement, Dominion Energy President and CEO Bob Blue emphasized the significance of the project, saying “our Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project shows that regulated offshore wind works in the United States. As we face unprecedented customer demand, offshore wind is critical to our diverse, all-of-the-above generation mix to keep the lights on for our customers with affordable, reliable and increasingly clean energy.”
The initial construction phase of the project has been a clear display of the hard work and dedication of many Virginia-based companies and workers to meet the timeline of completion for the CVOW project. Dominion’s new installation vessel, Charybdis, will be instrumental in transporting wind turbine materials to the project’s site next year, and work has already begun to clear the ocean floor to make way for undersea cables that will connect the wind farm to onshore power facilities.
We look forward to continuing to see progress on the CVOW project once the next monopile installation season begins next spring.
