Breaking News: In Major Step for Clean Energy and Economic Growth, Virginia SCC Approves Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) Project

The Virginia State Corporation Commission today approved Dominion Energy’s application for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, including the company’s cost recovery and electric interconnection and transmission plans. As the SCC’s announcement stated, “Following a full proceeding, the Commission found, as directed by the General Assembly, that construction of CVOW is in the public interest.”

This follows years of research, planning, and community meetings to build the best path forward for Virginia’s clean energy future and economic growth.

The CVOW project, which includes 176 turbines 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach, will place Virginia on a trajectory to lead offshore wind development in the United States, as Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth offer many advantages: best in class port, a central location, a capable workforce, and supportive businesses.

When fully constructed in 2026, the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind farm will deliver more than 8 million MWh of clean, renewable energy to the grid, avoiding as much as 4.877 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually – the equivalent of taking more than 1 million non-EV cars off the road for one year or planting more than 80 million trees.
