Dominion Energy Secures New Lease Area from Bureau of Ocean Energy Management for Additional Offshore Wind Development

In more exciting news for offshore wind industry development in Virginia, Dominion Energy announced today that they submitted the winning bid for a second lease area off the coast of Virginia Beach from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). This means Dominion will have the option to deploy additional regulated offshore wind generation – which will help to meet growing energy demand in Virginia while also supporting more clean energy jobs and economic growth.

According to BOEM, this new lease area could support between 2.1 gigawatts and 4.0 gigawatts of offshore wind energy generation. Along with the projected 2.6 gigawatts that will be supplied by the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) farm, this energy source is going to become a critical component of Virginia’s energy grid, giving us a more diversified – and therefore more reliable – energy structure. Offshore wind is an excellent low-cost option that is ready to meet the rising electricity demand that we are seeing statewide.

Virginia also already has the supply chain needed to support this industry. New businesses and industries are already coming to Virginia to take advantage of this burgeoning industry and the vast economic opportunity that comes with it.
