ICYMI: The United States’ First Offshore Wind Turbine Installation Vessel Successfully Launched and is Ready to Assist in CVOW Construction

In case you missed it, Charybdis, the United States’ first Jones Act-compliant offshore wind turbine installation vessel was successfully launched from land to water after being constructed at the Seatrium AmFEELS shipyard in Brownsville, Texas.

This is a major milestone for the continued progress of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, as the primary purpose of the vessel is to assist with the wind farm’s construction. Charybdis will be housed in Hampton Roads once it is complete and will play a major role in supporting not only the CVOW project but also the growing U.S. offshore wind industry.

According to Bob Blue, Dominion Energy’s chair, president and chief executive officer, the Charybdis is “key to the continued development of a domestic supply chain by providing a homegrown solution for the installation of offshore wind turbines.”

The construction of Charybdis is an excellent sign of the progress to come to our region. At peak construction, the construction of the ship created more than 1,200 jobs. As the project continues to develop, we can expect similar levels of clean energy jobs and revenue for our region, further positioning Hampton Roads to be a hub for the growing offshore wind industry.
