ICYMI: Final Federal Approvals for Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Represent Another Major Milestone Towards Successful Project Completion
In case you missed it, the final two major federal approvals that Dominion Energy needed for its Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) farm were completed by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, paving the way for the utility company to move forward with the construction of the project.
The latest approval from the BOEM gave the green light regarding CVOW’s Construction and Operations Plan (COP), which allows for offshore construction to take place. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also issued its permit to allow for the construction of the CVOW’s electric transmission line that will bring the clean energy that the wind farm generates onshore.
This is great news for the project and for Virginia. Once it is completed, the 2.6-gigawatt project will be the largest offshore wind project in the nation. The CVOW is set to provide clean energy to up to 660,000 Virginia homes, bringing Virginia much closer to our clean energy goals.
The CVOW project is also predicted to bring vast economic benefits to the Hampton Roads region, including over 1,000 jobs once the turbines are fully completed. Additionally, due to the region’s existing infrastructure in place to support the development of the CVOW project, Hampton Roads is set to become a hub for the offshore wind industry in the United States.
As approvals keep coming through, the CVOW is shaping up to meet all expectations in terms of timeline and budget and will take its place as a significant milestone on the path toward a more sustainable energy future in Virginia.
